Eligibility Criteria

We are looking for candidates who, at the moment of application, are in their third or second to last year of secondary school. Generally, you should not have too many difficulties at school, you are committed to your fellow men, you have wide interests, you want to contribute to the social climate at school and later on to society as a whole. In other words - it is important to UWC that you have thought about what you can give back to human kind and not only about what opportunities are in it for you.

If you are already in your second to last year of secondary school you will spend an extra year in secondary school as you have to take both years at UWC.

To be able to apply through the Luxembourgish National Committee, the candidate needs to fulfil the conditions of both age and residency/citizenship as described below.

Age

Applicants must be between 16 and 18 years old and completing the 4th (grade 10) or 5th year (grade 11) of secondary school by the time they submit their application. Selected students must be at least 16 years old by the time they start their enrolment at UWC in the summer of 2025.

School results

Before you start at a UWC you will have to have successfully passed your 4th year (3ème or equivalent) at a Luxembourgish secondary school or any equivalent thereof.

Residency and citizenship

Candidates with the Luxembourgish nationality and who live in Luxembourg are eligible to apply. Luxembourgish nationals who are residents outside of Luxembourg are eligible to apply, on the condition that the candidate:

  • has a demonstrable, ongoing connection with Luxembourg;
  • is native or equivalent fluent in one of the national languages

Candidates with a non-Luxembourgish nationality can apply if they have lived in Luxembourg permanently for at least five years or they have studied at a local Luxembourgish school for at least three years, preceding their application, or they have a refugee status. In that case, they do not need to satisfy these criteria and are welcome to apply if they fulfil the age conditions.

A candidate who meets these criteria will not be permitted to submit a parallel application via another national committee or directly to the different colleges.

If selected, eligible candidates may qualify for scholarship support from the Luxembourgish National Committee according to its policy of needs-based funding.

A candidate who does not meet these criteria, could explore applying to UWC via the UWC Global Selection Programme. This is available for students who:

  • Do not need a scholarship to attend UWC
  • Wish to have entry results 9-12 months before the beginning of the school year
  • Are looking to attend a specific UWC school or college

Whichever route a candidate chooses, the application will be assessed against UWC's core selection criteria. Please note that a candidate may only submit one application per year to study the IB Diploma Programme at UWC. You may not apply through two different UWC national committees or through a UWC national committee and the UWC Global Selection Programme concurrently.
